When many people hear the word Juneteenth, they think of celebrations, family gatherings, music, and freedom.
But behind the national holiday is one remarkable woman who refused to let history be forgotten.
Her name is Opal Lee, and at more than 90 years old, she inspired a nation to remember a story that should have never been overlooked.
What Is Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved African Americans in Texas were free.
This came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had declared enslaved people in Confederate states free.
For generations, Black families celebrated June 19 as a day of freedom, remembrance, hope, and community. Yet for much of America, the significance of Juneteenth remained largely unknown.
That would eventually change.
Meet the Grandmother of Juneteenth
Long before Juneteenth became a federal holiday, Opal Lee was educating her community about its importance.

She began walking.

She also gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures supporting the effort to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

In 2021, after decades of advocacy by countless individuals—including Opal Lee's tireless work—Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday.
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the legislation establishing **Juneteenth National Independence Day.
Opal Lee stood beside him at the White House as history was made.
For millions of Americans, her smile became a symbol of perseverance, hope, and the power of one person to make a lasting difference.
